The appointment of Dr. Srinivasa Venu Uppuluri as an Independent Director of DEK & Mavericks Green Energy Limited, effective May 26, 2026, reflects a wider pattern that is reshaping governance in India’s energy and infrastructure sector — one where professionals with hands-on experience in technology, strategy, and capital deployment are increasingly being invited to take formal oversight roles at the board level.
World Development Corporation's Directors' Institute formally recognised this appointment through its distinguished professional network, the Global Community for Board Directors. Although appointments within the energy sector have become increasingly prevalent, this appointment reflects a broader evolution in boardroom thinking. It underscores how organisations navigating the transition toward renewable and sustainable energy are becoming more intentional in selecting leaders whose expertise aligns with the governance, strategic oversight, and long-term demands of a rapidly changing industry.
A career shaped by complexity and scale
Dr. Uppuluri brings to the boardroom more than three decades of leadership experience spanning energy technology, solar EPC, industrial automation, investment strategy, and business operations. His career arc is distinguished not merely by its length, but by the breadth of functions and sectors it encompasses — from engineering leadership on the plant floor to strategy and capital deployment in the boardroom.
His most recent executive role, as Vice President – Strategy and Investments at SB Energy, saw him direct the firm’s strategic direction and investment portfolio during a critical phase of India’s renewable energy buildout. Prior to this, he served as Vice President and Growth Committee Member at Amara Raja Power Systems, where he contributed to business expansion strategy in the energy storage and power systems domain. Earlier still, he held the position of Vice President – Innovations at Hero Motors, where he led the company’s technology innovation function.
For a decade between 2005 and 2015, Dr. Uppuluri served as General Manager & Head at Carraro Technologies India, a role that demanded both deep technical acumen and full operational accountability. During the same period, he additionally took on responsibilities as Business Head and Director on the Board of Carraro Group’s Santerno India solar business vertical, where he led the establishment and growth of the solar EPC business from inception. This dual mandate — combining operational leadership with formal board-level accountability — gave him early and formative exposure to governance responsibilities that many executives encounter only much later in their careers.
Before his decade at Carraro, he served as Director of Engineering at Emerson for three years, overseeing engineering functions in a globally networked industrial environment. Earlier roles at Tecumseh, and a six-year tenure at VIP Industries Limited — where he progressed from Management Trainee to Senior Officer — established the foundational discipline in engineering, operations, and process improvement that would define the pattern of his subsequent leadership.
Investment banking and clean energy advisory
Between 2022 and 2024, Dr. Uppuluri served as Vice President and Board Member at an investment banking firm, extending his exposure to capital markets, transaction advisory, and corporate finance in the energy and infrastructure domain. This period broadened his perspective beyond operational and technical considerations, equipping him with an understanding of how capital structures and investment decisions interact with governance and long-term enterprise value.
Currently, in addition to his appointment at DEK & Mavericks Green Energy Limited, he serves as Advisory Board Member at Maithri Aquatech, a company reinventing water access and purification through decentralised and scalable solutions — a role that reflects his commitment to sustainable impact beyond conventional energy. He also continues to serve as Board Advisor and Shareholder at a technology company and a solar EPC firm, where his long-term strategic and sectoral perspective continues to guide business direction.
An academic foundation aligned with governance
Dr. Uppuluri’s academic and professional credentials reflect the same deliberate progression visible in his executive career, spanning engineering, management, and governance. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of India, both conferred in 2017, recognising his standing as a senior professional in the engineering community. He is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, reflecting a rigorous orientation towards process excellence and data-driven decision making. He is currently pursuing an LL.B., further reinforcing the legal and regulatory literacy that underpins effective independent directorship.
Critically, he completed the Independent Director Certification from the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) in August 2024 — a qualification that signals purposeful preparation for board-level responsibilities rather than a passive transition from executive life. This certification, governed by the Companies Act framework, equips directors with the legal, fiduciary, and strategic grounding required to exercise meaningful oversight.
His industry engagement has extended to leadership roles in professional bodies and chambers of commerce. He has served as Co-Chairman of the Energy Division at the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI), as Deputy Chairman of the Institute of Management Consultants of India (IMCI), and as Past Programme Chairman for e-mobility at the Confederation of Indian Industry — each reflecting an ability to shape policy discourse and professional norms in the sectors he has served.
The governance context: Why sector depth matters in green energy boards
This appointment comes at a moment when India’s clean energy sector is undergoing rapid structural change. The scale of capital being deployed into solar, wind, storage, and grid infrastructure demands governance that can interrogate not only financial performance but also the technical, regulatory, and operational risks inherent in large-scale energy transition.
The Companies Act, 2013 substantially redefined the responsibilities of directors in India, requiring active engagement with matters of strategy, risk, and accountability rather than ceremonial participation. Independent directors, in particular, are expected to provide a layer of scrutiny that professional management alone cannot supply. In this environment, the value of an independent director who has personally led engineering functions, managed project delivery on the ground, navigated investment decisions, and operated within formal board structures is considerable.
Dr. Uppuluri’s career is defined by precisely this combination. He has moved between disciplines — engineering, operations, strategy, investment, and governance — with each transition adding a dimension that deepens his capacity to contribute at the board level. His appointment at DEK & Mavericks Green Energy Limited is not an instance of an executive arriving at governance by default; it is the outcome of deliberate and multi-faceted preparation.
A wider pattern in infrastructure boardrooms
World Development Corporation's Directors' Institute has emerged as a recognised force in advancing board leadership, governance excellence, ESG awareness, and responsible business practices across global markets. With a growing footprint across India, the Middle East, and other international regions, the institution collaborates with academic and industry stakeholders to prepare senior professionals for leadership roles at the highest levels of corporate decision-making. More than 7,500 executives and directors have participated in its programmes, reflecting the increasing demand for structured governance education among experienced business leaders. The institution's work has received recognition across prominent international platforms, including UNESCO forums, events in Dubai and Riyadh, the Australian and British Parliaments, and the Ambassador's Summit 2024 in New Delhi. Through its ongoing initiatives, World Development Corporation's Directors' Institute continues to contribute to stronger governance frameworks, leadership development, ethical business practices, and boardroom effectiveness across both emerging and mature economies.
A noticeable pattern has emerged within the Institute's professional network. Increasing numbers of accomplished executives are choosing to proactively prepare for governance and board leadership responsibilities rather than relying solely on their executive experience. As organisations face more complex strategic, regulatory, and stakeholder challenges, the distinction between operational leadership and governance oversight is becoming less pronounced. Companies operating in sectors undergoing significant transformation, including energy, infrastructure, technology, and manufacturing, are placing greater emphasis on appointing directors who possess firsthand experience in navigating the very decisions, risks, and opportunities they are expected to supervise at the board level.
Dr. Srinivasa Venu Uppuluri’s appointment at DEK & Mavericks Green Energy Limited is a further example of this evolving standard — where operational depth, sector expertise, and governance preparation converge to define the modern independent director.
