Dubai, UAE – 13 February 2026 – At a time when boardrooms across the Gulf are undergoing their most significant governance overhaul in a generation, a room full of Dubai's senior business leaders gathered for an unusual proposition: not to learn how to lead, but to find out if they are ready to govern.

What is a Board Readiness Seminar, and why does it matter in the GCC?

A Board Readiness Seminar is a structured governance assessment event designed to help senior executives identify the specific competency gaps that separate operational leadership from boardroom directorship. In the GCC, where demand for qualified independent directors is rising rapidly, such events have become a critical career development tool.

Directors' Institute – World Council of Directors, an initiative by World Development Corporation, hosted its exclusive Board Readiness Seminar, "Becoming a Corporate Director on Global Boards," at the Dubai Digital Park, International Free Zone Authority, drawing a curated group of AVPs, Vice Presidents, Directors, Founders, and C-suite executives from across industries.

The session was opened by Dr Heval Mehta, Managing Director, Directors' Institute – World Council of Directors, and led by Mr Zeeshaan Pathan, Group Managing Director, Group Managing Director and CEO of World Development Corporation. Dr. Mehta is a distinguished business leader and Certified Independent Director with 25+ years of global experience, renowned for transforming organisations through structured governance, strategic clarity, and innovation-driven solutions. Mr Pathan is a recognised board advisor and corporate governance authority across the GCC. He is widely regarded as the most influential voice in compliant decision-making, boardroom leadership and corporate governance development. Together, they brought a powerful combination of governance expertise and boardroom insight to the room. The seminar was built around a single, disarming premise: that many of the region's most accomplished executives may be closer to the boardroom than they think, yet unaware of the specific gaps standing in their way.

What followed was not a typical seminar. Participants were walked through the regulatory shifts reshaping board composition across the GCC, from Saudi Arabia's independent director quotas and ESG mandates to the UAE's strengthened governance frameworks. These regulatory developments are central to understanding corporate governance in the Gulf in 2026, as Vision 2030 objectives and growing institutional investor participation continue to raise the bar for board-level accountability. The message was clear: demand for governance-ready directors has never been higher. It is this reality that explains why Directors' Institute is recognised as a leading corporate governance training institution globally – one honoured at the Australian and British Parliaments, recognised by Forbes, in collaboration with Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and with over 7,000 directors trained across 50 countries.

The conversation then turned personal. Through a structured self-assessment framework, attendees examined their own readiness against the nine competencies that define modern directorship – spanning governance, ESG, technology, financial acumen, and cultural intelligence. These nine competencies represent the global benchmark for board director readiness and are increasingly used by nomination committees across the GCC and internationally to evaluate director candidates. For many, it was the first time they had measured their boardroom potential against a global benchmark.

What holds senior executives back from securing board seats?

Equally candid was a discussion on what silently holds leaders back: from invisible personal branding and weak professional networks, to the common trap of waiting passively for board opportunities rather than positioning strategically for them.

The seminar also outlined a clear pathway forward through Directors' Institute's International Corporate Directorship Programme (ICDP) – a 5-in-1 certification offered in partnership with Woolf University – for those looking to formalise and accelerate their board journey. The ICDP is specifically designed for senior executives in the GCC and globally who are preparing to transition from operational roles into board directorship. Separately, Directors' Institute has an established collaboration with Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, focused on redefining global boardroom leadership and executive education – further strengthening the Institute's commitment to world-class governance development.

Mr Zeeshaan Pathan noted: "We didn't set out to just inspire people; we set out to make them see clearly. The leaders in that room don't need motivation. They need precision. They need to know exactly where they stand, what the boardroom demands, and what move to make next. That's what this seminar delivered."
